Serve

At Naomi Makemie Presbyterian Church, you will find numerous opportunities to serve, benefitting our local community and beyond.

Our heart for service stems from our mission verse: “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Let’s  unpack the three-fold invitation of that verse:

TO ACT JUSTLY

More than merely a matter of being fair-minded, but a call to action, to ensure that everyone is treated fairly, including — and perhaps especially — the vulnerable and voiceless, those Jesus called “the least of these” (Matt. 25:34-40).

TO LOVE MERCY

Like justice, mercy is more than just a concept, but involves action on behalf of someone in need. As God shows mercy to us (Titus 3:5), we are to show mercy and compassion to others, most often shown through acts of service.

TO WALK HUMBLY

Jesus said he came “not to be served, but to serve” (Matt. 20:28). He is our role model for serving God and others with humility, putting our pride aside and putting the needs of others before our own.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at Naomi Makemie Presbyterian Church was founded in February 2003 by church member Marge Carpenter, inspired by similar ministries she learned about in West Hartford, CT and St. Louis, MO. Members knit or crochet shawls for people who are ill, have suffered a loss, or are navigating a personal crisis. Each finished shawl is blessed at a Prayer Group meeting and delivered with a card expressing the congregation's love and prayers. Since the ministry began, more than 553 shawls have been delivered to those in need.

Anyone is welcome to participate, whether by making a shawl or by requesting one for a friend or loved one. Knitted shawls are made on size 13 needles with 57 cast-on stitches, while crocheted shawls use a 10 mm hook, both worked from three skeins of Lion Brand Homespun yarn. That said, there is no strict right or wrong approach, and other yarns or patterns are welcome. Finished shawls can be brought to a Prayer Group meeting or to church on Sunday. Donations toward yarn or postage are also gratefully accepted.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

FOR EASTERN SHORE STUDENTS

The Eastern Shore Presbyterian Ministries (ESPM) was formed by the four Presbyterian churches on Virginia's Eastern Shore to address the substantial needs of local families in Accomack and Northampton Counties. One of its signature programs provides school supplies to every public elementary school on the Eastern Shore each year, and what began as a focused church effort has grown into a broader community initiative drawing support from congregations and individuals across the region. The annual purchase and distribution has become a meaningful tradition in the life of these churches and a tangible expression of their commitment to local children.
