Breaking Bread Together
Dear Friends,
June is always bittersweet for many reasons! We celebrate graduations, we wind down the programming, our choir is taking a break, and we pause most weekly activities to regenerate ourselves, and enjoy the summer fully. For the leadership, it becomes a time of planning ahead, with excitement for the things to come.
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)
When I describe Naomi Makemie to friends, I always begin by mentioning how food is so central to the church. You might wonder why it is my first way of describing it, but it says a lot about you all! It implies that it is a community of caring people that want to nurture one another. Nearly a year of fellowship following Sunday services has shown me that food brings the people together, it is a way to show the love of Christ through sharing a meal in good company.
Additionally, I’ve been in many choirs in my life, but this is the only one that celebrates each rehearsal with breaking bread together after a good practice. What a way to connect with other singers and family members!
To keep with the tradition, it was wonderful to celebrate graduations and the end of our program year with a great picnic event at the manse. So much food, as always!
But that’s not all. I have also observed so much caring in the preparation of food for memorial services by the Presbyterian Women. And of course, potlucks are a must as well during our movie nights and during our Lenten series. The year began with a chili cookoff and ended with a picnic, with tons of meals in between.
In this wonderful church, we feed our souls with the Word of God, and feed our bodies with food that has been carefully harvested and prepared by loving hands. And sometimes, we have fun snacks, too!
I am grateful for this community of faith that shares the love of Jesus in so many ways.
Peace,
Pastor Geneviève
